Listening to music such as "Fantasy on a Theme of Thomas Tallis" by Vaughn Williams makes me profoundly sad. It represents a lost Britain. For those who don't know, it's the piece used in "Master and Commander" as a shipmate drowns off cape Horn. Very beautiful, very sad. I wake in the morning, remember how we've allowed successive governments to wreck our country and my heart breaks.

Vaughn Williams was a composer who used to cycle out into the countryside to ask farmhands to sing their folk songs. He'd write them down, return home and compose orchestral pieces based on ancient melodies. Vaughn Williams was English from a Welsh family, but studied a course from a Scottish university. His music represents the harmonies of traditional Britain. Vaughn Williams was too old to serve as a soldier during WW1, but enlisted as a stretcher bearer and ambulance driver. Some of his compositions represent the British soul, and express his sadness of witnessing so many young men with ripped and broken bodies.

Another composer who composed orchestral pieces based upon folk songs was George Butterworth, who composed "The Banks of Green Willow" in 1913. Butterworth enlisted as a private soldier and died at the Somme. If Butterworth could see London today, he would weep.
