@steveblog1 "Never mind the flaming fighters, it's the bloody bombers we're after!" was a line shouted by Douglas Bader. But Bader didn't say "flaming". Bader got into trouble because his call was broadcast over the Tannoy and his F-word was heard by the WAAFs in the plotting room.

Every part of the movie is closely based on real events. Ian McShane's sergeant pilot is based upon the true story of a pilot whose wife and daughter died in the blitz. Afterwards, the real hero dedicated himself to vengeance, becoming a skilled night fighter in Hurricanes. He undertook a very personal war. On one occasion, a German crewman baled out of a stricken bomber and smashed his blood and brains across the Hurricane's wing leading edge. A fitter volunteered to wash it off. The pilot said no, he wanted the enemy's brains and blood left as is. Eventually, this brave warrior failed to return from an operation and was lost. All of this is a true story, except it isn't. The pilot's daughter died in a regular house fire, not a bombing raid. His wife and son survived into old age. Even so, the movie's depiction is related to real events.

@richardwebb9532 Regarded by those who knew him as the greatest leader of all. The character played by Robert Shaw in the movie "The Battle of Britain" was loosely based on Malan, roll-neck sweater and all.

@songsmith31a Dowding was criticised by his peers after the Battle for having done a poor job. He was shunted off to lesser roles before being retired. By the 1960s, historians had re-examined the Battle and declared Dowding did an excellent job. TRUE STORY ABOUT THE FINAL SCENE: Dowding was invited to a pre-release screening of the movie. He was very frail, and was rolled into the cinema in a wheel chair. When the lights came up at the end of the movie, Dowding was seen to be weeping. Imagine seeing yourself portrayed by the UK's most revered actor, and having your reputation restored in this way.

@navelriver Sumptuous music. No CGI. Lots of advisors on hand. According to the commentary on the special edition DVD, the bloke in the white jacket in the Luftwaffe mess was an advisor who'd been a Luftwaffe officer during the Battle. They gave him a walk-on part.

@sandgrownun66 "You know what to do with the lame ducks". I didn't understand the phrase when I heard it as a child in the cinema. My Dad explained it to me.
