  3.  @CASPB  I tried. I was a Conservative Party activist for 29 years, but I allowed my membership to lapse under Cameron. I organised a fringe meeting at the annual conference, and invited Mr. Powell as the speaker. I read somewhere that he disliked ballpoint pens and preferred fountain pens, so I wrote a letter to him with a fountain pen. I've got a photo somewhere, showing myself next to Mr. Powell at the event. The Party found a trivial reason why the meeting had to be excluded from the official fringe guide. Lots of other stories I could tell. I also rubbed shoulders with Bercow when we were both Young Conservatives. He's HYPER-intelligent, but with a narcissistic ego which is even bigger. He masqueraded as a libertarian anti-federalist right-winger in those days. These days I've given up. Condemn me if you must, but I've done my bit.

  4.  @CASPB  No probs. I wish I'd joined UKIP when they started. With my background, I might've been selected as a candidate and become an MEP. Instead I stuck with the Tories. These days I've given up, like a passenger on the Titanic who sees the last life boat has gone.

  5.  @johnbowkett80  Mr. Powell's biography had just been published. I persuaded a local book shop to pay for hiring the hotel reception room where the fringe meeting took place. He signed dozens of books that day, and the shop was delighted with their investment. Sadly, I missed out and didn't buy a signed book, because they were pricey and I was nearly broke at the time. Ah, regrets.
