A big violent drugged-up angry man gets handcuffed and put in a cell. It's hard to know what else the cops could have done. Sometimes the fault lies with the individual and with the absence of familial care.

Agreed, but he was only left alone in the cell for three minutes. The cops weren't to know that he'd turn from an angry shrieking violent man to a corpse in so little time. Sometimes the cops have an impossible task.

@gee_emm He was handcuffed to protect himself and the people who arrested him. Paramedics couldn't attend to the guy unless he was handcuffed first. He was left in a cell for THREE MINUTES and died in that time. White guys would've been dealt identically. Where's the racism?

Leon Briggs was a screaming, angry violent man who was restrained for the protection of the police, himself and any paramedics who might have attended. Leaving the man unattended for three minutes isn't unreasonable.

A white male would have been dealt with identically. Racism had nothing to do with it. The next time there's a big drug-crazed angry man, screaming and behaving violently, shouting and swearing and spitting and biting and throwing punches and wrestling and grabbing, maybe YOU should deal with the guy WITHOUT cuffing him. If you leave him alone for THREE MINUTES, maybe YOU should be accused of racist murder.

@gee_emm Actually you're wrong. The incidence of black/white deaths in custody in the UK is virtually identical, taking into account the population sizes. The number of people dying in custody is thankfully tiny, and you're fractionally MORE likely to die in custody if you're white. Go on, look it up. As for protection: If a big man is going berserk in a public place, the safest thing for EVERYBODY is to put him in cuffs.

ALTERNATIVE NARRATIVE AGAINST CHANNEL 4'S SPIN: A big violent angry drugged-up man is handcuffed for his own protection and put in a police cell. He dies a mere THREE MINUTES after the cell door is closed. The cops could not have known this would have happened. It's claimed he was denied medical care. How long would it take to get paramedics to the man? More than three minutes I'd guess. Paramedics are not required to give medical care to angry violent shrieking men. They'd be within their training to refuse assistance. Every hospital has signage saying so. The claim of racism is completely fabricated and deliberately inflammatory, because a white man would have received identical attention. The fault lies with Mr. Briggs's own life decisions, plus the absence of care afforded him by his family during the days and years prior to his death. Stupid is as stupid does.
