  1. I've observed this myself. In my day (sorry if I'm a fossil) I went to an all-male school. more than half the teachers had done national service or served in wartime. A maths teacher who'd learned his skills for navigating to Berlin and back with Bomber Command, that sort of thing. They understood when to crack down hard on miscreants, and also when 14-year-olds were just doing boyish pranks. Lots of mutual respect.
