  1. Air forces in the late 30s tended to assume that the concept of the single engined fighter was obsolete. Hence the Me 110. The Air ministry had intended to phase the Hurricane and Spitfire out of production, in favour of the Beaufighter. Few plans survive first contact with the enemy. Intentions changed very quickly.
