  1. MONEY. If somebody somewhere has spices or tea to sell, you need the financial institutions to loan you the money to build a ship, sail there, bring it back and make a huge bundle of cash. Not by chance that the Dutch got their financial system sorted out first and became wealthy through sea trade. The Brits inherited the Dutch way of financing trade along with the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The French and Spanish were left far behind.
