As I understand it, every noble lost their land unless they swore allegiance to William. A system of appeal was implemented by the Church. A cauldron of water was brought to the boil. The Englishman was required to dip his arm in the boiling water, up to his armpit. Upon withdrawing his arm, if the skin was unaffected or healed quickly, God had judged his claim as rightful and his lands would be returned. Yeah right, that was justice.

@IamRayson Nearly all the aristocracy is descended from the Norman conquerors and their boot-licking Quisling allies. They stole our land in the 11th century, and most of the land still belongs to their descendants.

@dhm7815 True. The "feudal system". In return for being granted their lands, senior nobles were required to provide thousands of men at arms in a time of war. Those nobles passed the responsibility to lesser nobles, who passed the responsibility to barons and land-owners. A maintained militia on the cheap. Worked great unless the nobility rose against the king.
