The greatest African in British history was King Gezo of Dahomie. He demanded that at his funeral, hundreds of slaves should be decapitated until there was sufficient blood in a pit to float his coffin-canoe. The horrific event was witnessed by British merchants, who reported back to London. Hence the RN being tasked with ending the slave trade forever.
