The Vatican ordered him to pay penance for (I forget the phrase) something like "lewd acts", Vatican code for doing male-on-male stuff. A bit like in the 18th / 19th century British Army, a soldier being flogged for "being dirty" was code for privates w4nk1n9 the privates of other privates.
