It's a good indication that it really wasn't time for Catalan Independence because for the Populist Unionist to win like that was a harder thing to achieve then the separatist that via a backdoor weird voting system in the rural area's and towns of Catalonia heavily manipulated in their favour still didn't manage to win or get unity among their ranks. The Spanish government that now has temporary control of Catalonia should (if they are wise) remove that system, it's clearly undemocratic and heavily manipulated in favour of any separatist. Don't get me wrong, if it's independence the Catalans want i think they should have it,....but only via a legal and honest unbiased democratic process, unlike what Mr Carles Puigdemont tried to do via his illegitimate undemocratic Coup d'etat attempt,....this doesn't vindicate the man, he's still a crook that needs to be dealt with, that includes the Coupist that joined him, all should face the courts and the full force of the law.
