Contact your representatives ASAP about their position on gun safety legislation and vote accordingly. Repeal PLCAA, the worst law Bush ever signed, to restore liability to gun manufacturers, and their own lawyers will insist on gun safety protocols at point of sale to demonstrate due diligence in court proceedings.

  18. There is a lot we don't know yet. Hopefully a fair trial will uncover all of it. Entirely plausible that football players are also fraternity members. Hard to know which hazing incidents can be more severe: fraternities or athletic teams. Several college fraternity hazing incidents have resulted in deaths. A few years ago, a high school student was brave enough to come forward about a high school swim team (elite school btw) that used sodomy as their hazing initiation. What if institutions take absolutely seriously their legal responsibility to protect safety. Teasing and bullying are not normal or necessary parts of growing up. And hazing is not teasing. No. A hostile environment is a tragedy waiting to happen. Hold the institutions responsible in addition to the perpetrators.

  20. The university does not permit guns, but Virginia is a very gun friendly state, so ... Plus he was in the middle of a hazing situation, so maybe he felt unsafe and maybe Virginia makes it too easy to obtain a gun. Bad combination. I do wish UVA had resolved the hazing investigation.

  22.  @LeftInBama  Many years ago, UVA had zero reputation for football. The football team was so bad, they actually had a band that would do parodies and comedy during the halftime shows. (Although they were awesome in basketball, but that's a different story.) UVA used to be proud of that, focusing on academics instead of football. Took a big turn to embrace football primarily because of the money that sport can bring to a university. Wonder if that has anything to do with looking the other way on hazing incidents involving football players. Don't know for certain, but seems possible. What a tragic mess.

  50. That's the point. A background check should not be rushed, it should be comprehensive. If a person is in a desperate rush to get an assault weapon, that is already a red flag. Yes, there must be a license in addition to a registration. For a car, you need a license, a registration plus the title. Finally the legislation must be national, because the sloppy patchwork of state to state regulations is obviously not working. Chicago is penalized by Indiana's soft gun laws. NYC is punished by illegal guns that flood up the turnpike from other states with sloppy gun laws. The illegal oversized magazine used in Buffalo came from Pa. Where are states' rights now?
