That report of a hazing incident might well be the missing piece of this story.

You are amazing to share his truth. People nowadays want every story to be simple, to fit into 140 characters. But life is messy and complicated, especially with guns more accessible than they should be, especially since Virginia is a pro gun state. If only that other school had more support services for your friend, if the teacher had more supervision, more observations. A tragic loss for us all. You are an amazing friend. Stay awesome. I hope he has been able to find meaningful use for his intelligence in the facility where he was placed. A somewhat monastic life moving forward? But monks were prolific academics back in history? Anyway, sorry this was so long, just wanted to share that I am impressed with your humanity. Be well, be safe.

Love Wins: Thank you for sharing more accurate information. UVA does admit that there was a hazing investigation that was "unresolved". So it seems that he had reached out to official channels to resolve a situation. Also, a statement that he owned a gun, but had never threatened anyone with it, and his roommate could not confirm that he had ever seen a gun. Given that Virginia is a state that vigorously supports guns (although guns are not permitted on grounds) it's not hard to imagine that a 22 year old could get a gun if he began to feel that he might need one for protection, especially if he felt that his university was not taking his situation seriously. Unfortunately, many hazing incidents at the college level can be quite extreme. Some of these incidents have resulted in death (forced alcohol poisoning, etc). This is not a young man who was troubled his entire life, I believe he was an honor student. I fear that many people are sharing inaccurate information and making a bad situation worse. It is not unusual for universities to do an inadequate job with internal investigations because they fear damage to the reputation of the institution. In my opinion, there is more to this story.

President Carter, thank you for sharing your life with the nation. Thank you for Habitat for Humanity and your work supporting free and fair elections globally. Thank you for EVERYTHING. We were truly blessed to know you.

Seems that this young man had gone to university administration, because they admit that there was a hazing investigation on file that was "unresolved". In my opinion, there is more to this story. Sometimes universities don't want to damage the reputation of the institution. Would be interesting to see what that hazing investigation involved. Don't know if it's a public document.

What if this young man found himself in a state that didn't make it so easy to get a gun? Maybe he could have found another way to force the university to deal with the hazing situation without this terrible tragedy. Would have been nice if the university had lived up to their own honor code.

Yes, I think this was about personal safety. If the university was doing a better job of ending hazing (really ending it, not just saying you did and then look the other way while it continues on) this young man might not have brought a gun on grounds. This was not about an AR 15, this was a concealed handgun. I agree that we should work first on eliminating AR 15 because those events are more massive and random and terroristic in nature. And working on the AR 15 issue might be a good first step in turning around this pervasive gun culture that has the gun vendors' cash registers ringing.

The university admits that there was a hazing investigation that was "unresolved". Hazing at the college level can often be quite serious. Some of these hazing incidents have resulted in death, alcohol poisoning etc. Something more happened here, in my opinion.

UVA sports officials report that there was an investigation of hazing that was "unresolved". That was a video interview conducted today.
