Look for the next wave that will push you back to shore. Currents are one thing, but waves will always reach the shore, right? You're looking for one that's not going to hold you down or rough you up too much before it gets you to shore. Also, swimming parallel to shore is essential. Plus, swim at beaches you know well. That's probably why tourists are particularly vulnerable, because by definition they might not have used that beach a thousand times before. If you don't feel confident swimming in the ocean, look for a swimming pool.
