  1. Death count seems low honestly, I would expect something like 500-2000 , but China is notorious for underreporting deaths in similar events.

When you consider just over 100,000 buildings/houses were damaged in my city Christchurch NZ in the 2010 & 2011 Earthquakes (metro area of only 500K people), 360K not hard to believe at all as that area is vastly more populated at 4 million. Keep in mind many cities are old ish even in developed countries, many building can date back often 50-100+ years when building codes were far weaker. Even San Francisco wiped out in the past would still be a complete mess today in a large or "very close" medium Earthquake due to a lot of older construction.

  3. Correct, like any bomb its not "just" the size that matters, its how close you are to the epicenter, and depth also really matters. All this is something a lot of people don't realize when talking about Earthquakes.
