  8. I'm 30, have been listening to music (that wasn't my parents' music) since I was about 11. I started off with alt metal and hard rock, went quickly to EDM, and since my 20s, I've basically been listening to anything. Metal, jazz, rock, pop, hip-hop, world music, classical, etc. What I've noticed about my tastes is that my adolescence was spent listening to visceral, accessible music and, as I grew older, I gravitated to more thoughtfully composed music. Now, I'm starting to go back in the opposite direction. I appreciate a cerebral jazz tune or contemporary classical piece but I can also find enjoyment in a well-made pop banger, as long as it's made with intention and care. At the end of the day, it's about effective communication and an interesting message.

  25. The difference between crystallized and procedural memory. Some people just 'get' facts and figures. I never did. I have to rep flashcards to remember half of what I know. But if you put hard science in front of me, I become a insatiable monster. I see the lines and not the individual points that make them up. Neither is a disability; it's just how you are built. Once you know that, you can press your strengths and mitigate your weaknesses. It's never the status you're born with that makes a person great, it's what a person did with the status they were given.

  35. I'm not debating skill. I'm not so familiar with both artists and singing as an artform to make a qualified opinion on either's technical skill. However, I will say that either this take (or, probably more accurately, the series of takes that were stitched together to comprise her vocal) was pretty poor or the processing (particularly the compression and distortion) was overdone. Whatever is going on here behind the scenes, this is not a good outcome.
