Whether is altruistic or egoistic or compassionate or morally wrong is obfuscating the point. The point he's making is that people act in their own self-interest.

  14. I don't see why someone would be against life extension. Death doesn't make us human; it is what we do with life that is important. If I could live forever, I would choose to do so. Not for fear of death, mind you, but because it would potentially give me all the time I need to do the things I need to do.

  18. Like alcohol, people refuse to use it responsibly. My last girlfriend decided to stop pursuing her education for and career in phlebotomy/nursing because "you can't smoke weed and that's who I am, a girl who smokes weed." And that's not cherry picking; my uncle doesn't leave his house because pain > smoking > can't drive, my friend's daughter is permabaked and can't hold a job or raise her newborn. but criminalization isn't good either; these people were probably gonna do these things even if pot didn't exist. It's a fault in their ability to choose with a higher morality. That, somehow, drugs fix existential problems.

  24. I love the balance of optimism and pragmatism in this video. We could do so many immense things as a species but we are so busy with inane wars and conflicts to rally to each other and solve the real issues at hand. I think machine learning and robotics will probably help us overcome the barriers of our flesh and allow us a little more leverage in accomplishing more grandoise feats.
