A substantial proportion of the Ukrainians think of themselves as Russians. The current government in Kiev are about to start a civil war, to stay in control, and punish internal opposition. Blinken is lying through his teeth.

Well, we do not know for certain if the Ukrainians would be better off merged with anybody else. I think the best route for the Ukrainians is to follow a Swiss path. Strict neutrality. Mind your own business. Minimal corruption. Minimal centralization of authority. Secure borders. Mutual respect of languages, beliefs, etc. But... Washington wants another Iraq.
