Priviatization of rail has been a never ending disaster in The UK. Privatization of air transport has made no difference to Ireland because the two prominent airlines are cut throat competitors, and there are others like Nowegian, Easyjet, Buzz who want market share. Not all public enterprises or sectors are the same.
