A bit like the way that Washington ignored a brutal dictatorship in Indonesia who persecuted the East Timorese as long as that dictatorship supported them against Communist regimes in SE Asia. Young Americans fighting for democracy in SE Asia, and the politicians selling arms to a tyrant in Jakarta.
