"dont cars make travel so much quicker??" "sure do yay!!" "You can travel so much farther!" "Yeah nice!!" "work and shopping can be so much farther away from where you live!" "that's true" "everything is so so spread out now!" "uh.." "its more affordable to live an hour from work! and there's traffic and parking to worry about!! AND its not even POSSIBLE to do a small grocery shop without driving because it's no longer walkable and there's no public transport!!" "please no" "oh and there's basically no other option other than to drive if you want to go anywhere ever!!!!"

@dearjohn8789 No one thinks cars should be banned, we just want you Quin, and everyone else to have the luxury of not being FORCED to travel a non-walkable, non-PT-able distance in an expensive, wasteful, large vehicle. Americans seem to think any change means everything else lost. All the people in amsterdam who want to drive their car to the grocery store once a month for one massive shop simply DO so. It's all still there, you just have much more freedom.

@rettwoods you can see how poverty traps people into corners. Corners which are often quite expensive to be in, but more expensive to get out of

@feartheghus You have clearly not been to Europe and have been fed bull haha There's no upside to building your world around cars instead of people and public transport with cars in the background.

@wendyarbes9514 I love this thread because people just keep bringing up the same point and then I get to repeat myself: Walkable neighbourhood = still use your car as much as and in any way you want to, but with less traffic AND less distance needed to travel. You also have the FREEDOM to choose to not use your car, if you are 1. able (disabled and the elderly need access to vehicles both personal and public, as you know), 2. wanting to do that. Non-walkable = You have NO FREEDOM of choice, literally everyone must use a car for even the most basic of things, terrible traffic, much greater distances between necessities. If you lose the ability to drive (cataracts, injury, age) you will be stranded and need to rely on the generosity of a caretaker to drive you everywhere and haul your large shopping trips. You will not be able to live unassisted for an entire period of your life that you would otherwise be able to care for yourself in a pedestrian-focussed rather than car-focussed area. One is just so clearly superior but seems some people just cannot fathom that walkable does not and never has anywhere at any time meant not-car-able.

@Shep Raynham not all americans and english ppl love driving everywhere, let them have the freedom of choice

@Shep Raynham I understand your point about pushback, but its very easy to justify the "enormous" cost of building the infrastructure, considering it saves money an immense amount of resources in the long run in every way

@Shep Raynham ok mate, be against useful change for the sole reason that that change will have pushback then <shrug>
