I remember hearing about some lunatic kid in the states who would take apart smoke detectors to extract the radioactive material. He was collecting it for something and obviously coating himself, his home, and the surrounding neighborhood in dangerous amounts of radiation. I'm sure that radiation exposure has killed him by now.
