I think you nailed this topic very well, yes religion did not die in the Soviet Union but it is difficult to crasp how important it was to the ordinary citizens. I've never never bothered with the fancy churches in Moscow, St Petersburg or the Golden Ring.... I've have visited a few way out there in the East around Chusovoy, very old wooden structures. Here for most of people in the west who identify as Christians, Christmas Day is possibley the most special day, in modern day Russia New Year is the most special day. That's why it's difficult sometimes to gauge how much damage if any the Soviet Union did to religion in Russia. For most though apart from the fact the 25th of December is a working day in Russia (yes I know it is not the Orthodox Christmas day which is the 7th of January) it will however look like Christmas back home, the big holiday is though New Years where people exchange gifts and eat a special meal, so I'd say communism did have an affect on religion in Russia.

@Maryland_Kulak no they see him as the one who destroyed their empire, the is though it was already collapsing
33
You have no idea why the war was started...... All those former Soviet republics and Warsaw Pact countries joined NATO for a very good reason
14
You could say the same for many countries who were forced to except communism by Moscow and the Bolsheviks
13
Really? By all means explain why. Because they wanted to be a democracy?
13
Have you ever asked yourself why so many former Soviet republics and Warsaw Pact countries joined NATO? Have a good think about it
12
@NameRiioz are you seriously trying to suggest Ukraine doesn't have the right to self determination? Putin is literally destroying Russia and for what? So yeah in my opinion he is a mad man.
11
@unstoppabletigertalukan6710 there's a guy with a YouTube channel called SerpentZA his content is generally about China but he's from South Africa and does mention issues currently in South Africa including how its gone back on many claims regarding not seeking retribution.
8
Seriously you really need to stop over thinking stuff
8
Have you watched this channel before?
7
@armyofninjas9055 current situation in the US has nothing to do with the video, did you live in the the USSR?
7
Can't believe you didn't mention Star Trek
7
12 years for murder ???? If it was the US you could add a 0 to that
6
French rioters, who'd have thought?
5
Completely agree with David
5
Not necessarily, we know Putin invaded Ukraine without any real provocation
5
@julianshepherd2038 you can't be serious? The Soviet Union conspired with Nazis to divide up Europe and after the Nazis were defeated they occupied half of Europe for decades..... that's not what I call freedom
4
AlienIsolationist and where exactly did you get this alleged information? What Russians in Donbas? What oppression? Do you have an independent source that can verify your claims regarding Azov? Reports I've seen from the UNHCR actually state Russian backed terrorists kidnapped, tortured and murdered people in Eastern Ukraine. All you're doing is quoting kremlin propaganda which is what's actually caused this conflict not the Ukrainian government
4
@afgor1088 you have no idea what you're talking about, one of the things that actually shocked Soviet citizens happened during the Moscow Olympics, they'd be brainwashed into thinking that Soviets were the most healthy people but then they saw people from the west and could see that they'd been lied to
3
@afgor1088 been in various documentaries about the collapse of the Soviet Union. Curious when you're contradicted you demand a source yet provide nothing to back up your claims. Just because something is free doesn't mean it's any good by the way. As far as I am concerned you're just another one of those people who has never been to Russia let alone the Soviet Union yet thinks they're an expert. If it was so successful as you're trying to make out we still have the Soviet Union here today, the reality however does not support you.
3
@kylegovender6211 the fact that you've labelled him former South African when he is actually South African just shows me you're doing your best to undermine anything he has said...... bad news it's not working. I have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to malls, he simply occasionally talks about South Africa and how bad it has become.
3
@kylegovender6211 actually he currently lives in the US..... you sure you've watched his channel? He left because of what Xi Jinping was doing to the country. His early videos about China were very positive, but started to change after Xi began his reforms. Reminds me of what's going on in Russia now.
3
Who knows what goes through Putin's mind these days
3
I don't need to ask that idiot, people since the the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russians are free to travel anywhere, they have access to the latest technology something that they'd would have never had in the Soviet Union. Bald just goes to various ex-Soviet countries and exploits some people for his benefit not theirs
3
Who can predict what a mad man will do, all we can do is hope sanity prevails but naturally it doesn't always work out that way.
2
@NameRiioz complete nonsense I've already heard these excuses before and they simply don't hold water, this idea that he invaded Ukraine because he didn't want NATO on the Russian border is one of them which is obviously what you're trying to allude to of course pointing out the obvious fact that that situation already existed via the Baltic States is an inconvenience for people like you. This has absolutely nothing to do with Russian security so don't bother going there this is about Putin wanting control of Ukraine, just listen to what he says in his speeches. Ukraine is a democratic sovereign country with the right to self determination it is not Putin's decision. Putin through his stupidity and arrogance is destroying not only Ukraine but Russia.
2
@Gidi66 if you think China is a communist country you'd be wrong, I wouldn't have said the Soviet Union was truly communist. So he went to China for work reasons and to experience the culture..... Oh I can guarantee he obviously knows more than yourself.
2
@kylegovender6211 First off living in another country doesn't cause someone to lose their citizenship...... that's got to be the most ridiculous comment I've seen all day. He's never said that an official version of apartheid is in place today in South Africa, you've either made that up or you're mistaken, but given your previous comments I'd say the former. I'd say he was referring to to a revenge culture that now exists in South Africa, something that the white South Africans were promised would never happen.
2
I'm not convinced the US ever made a good car, this is just a little nostalgia
2
The video is about the Soviet Union, got a time machine?
2
What video did you watch? He didn't say there was no corruption in the USSR, he did not say it was hated by the Soviet people, he did not say religion was eradicated.
2
@PavelAVasilevich and so you studied history?
2
Because it is an unprovoked invasion
2
@dragonstormdipro1013 you do know that the Soviets along with the Nazis agreed to carve up Europe between each other? The Soviet Union supplied the Nazis with the oil and raw materials to wage war on Europe? The Soviet Union did not enter the war in order to help Europe fight the Nazis.... It was their own survival
2
@dragonstormdipro1013 so you're simply going to ignore all the terrible things they did because they found themselves fighting Germany? Again they certainly weren't doing it for our benefit
2
Not really..... the vast majority of members were forced into the Soviet Union
2
@DimaMitya2 I suggested that the Soviets put more emphasis on the New Year. I don't for second believe you have been anywhere near Chusovoy, in fact I now doubt that you have ever been to Russia. You're trying to educate me about Christmas and the New Year in Russia??? You sound like you are quoting an earlier post from myself
2
@DimaMitya2 I'm am a westerner I was born here and so was my father. I don't think you've ever seen Russia let alone be an actual Russian, I don't understand why you would keep up with the lies I can see it obviously bothers you that I actually lived in Russia, sorry but that's life. I can describe accurately the street, the shops the people where I lived
2
Was that because they were bought buy a German company?
2
Set up your own
2
@karlwalther no
2
Watch the video and try paying attention next time
2
The channel is about the Soviet Union
1
@ShubhamMishrabro Do you not understand what the cold war was about?
1
@greekcommie621 successful? By what measure can you make that claim? Because it obviously couldn't have been that successful given that the vast majority of former Soviet states voted to leave. What makes you think that I've never been to Russia? Never spoken to people who lived in the USSR? As for Tajikistan out of 179 countries they are at 149 on the corruption index. They have a president who has been in power for 27 years, that to me suggests it's a dictatorship, so I'll pass on that suggestion.
1
@greekcommie621 wow you are desperate, so some republics boycotted the vote unfortunately the information you supplied doesn't indicate why. But the overwhelming majority of Soviet citizens voted to leave a fact you cannot dispute. Well OK as you are fond of looking these things up, tell me what support does the communist party have in Russia? I really don't care whether or not you believe I've been to Russia, however that picture of me was taken in Russia. I actually think you're the one who hasn't been to Russia because you have no idea what public opinion is in Russia is actually like. I gave you two actual facts regarding Tajikistan, as far as him being democratically elected I suggest you look at the reports regarding complaints from international observers
1
@unstoppabletigertalukan6710 just put is name into the YouTube search engine and his channel will come up. As to which videos he mentions South Africa you'll need to try and find them because it would take a considerable amount of time to locate them as I don't think he made videos specifically about South Africa.
1
@kylegovender6211 the one thing that I know for certain is that the CCP isn't influenced by students. It wouldn't surprise me at all if some Chinese companies hire foreign workers as some kind of status symbol.
1
@kylegovender6211 no he's some kind of I. T specialist, body guard? Where did you get that idea from? He occasionally mentions the students he taught in China whilst living there. The Chinese government took lock down to an extreme level some were forced into quarantine centers while others literally had their properties sealed up with them inside.
1
@unstoppabletigertalukan6710 I've only seen videos of people protesting against the lockdowns being brutally attacked by police and other officials..... I honestly can't imagine the CCP paying any attention to students when they're shutting entire cities down
