Somebody needs to point out the difference between a Sniper Support Weapon and a Designated Marksman Weapon. They are not necessarily the same thing. The DM's weapon needs to be as compact and lightweight as possible, while maintaining good precision to 800 meters. The SSW needs superior precision to 800m or more, and can trade some weight and length to achieve that objective.

The M110 is a perfectly functional weapon, although not perfect (what is), the Army is just looking for something even better.

@Re.Configured One could make an argument that the Mk12 (5.56mm) could be utilized as a designated marksman rifle. And for a time the Marines were utilizing an M27 (one per squad), with an enhanced optic, as a marksman's weapon. So yes conceivably a 5.56mm weapon could be tasked as a DMR, although traditionally those are 7.62mmx51 based rifles.

The barrel was too long at 20". A 16" barrel with a telescoping stock, like the HK weapon would have been more effective.

@AmericanBusinessman422 Probably not completely, but to a reasonable degree. I would be interested if you have information on the subject. Cheers.

@AmericanBusinessman422 The later models introduced sand grooves into an improved bolt carrier to counter that problem.

@jonathangardner4475 True. But not as much as you might think with modern ammunition. And for the squad designated marksman role, not as a dedicated sniper platform, that is an acceptable tradeoff. At least the British Army (L129A1/16" barrel) and the US Army (CSASS/16" barrel) think so.

@jonathangardner4475 The LMT308 would be my first choice in a battle rifle (although HK MR762 and LaRue OBR are really nice as well).

@josephfranzen5626 Interesting. I would think the combat environment in Iraq (largely urban), would be more conducive to a precision 5.56mm DMR, than the wide open expanses of Afghanistan. Did you mostly use an M14-based rifle in Iraq? And assuming it had the standard 22" barrel, how nimble was the weapon in operations in urban terrain?

@EsotericResearcher777 You bring up an interesting point. Because in the SCAR Heavy family you not only have the standard battle rifle with 16 inch barrel (13 inch if you want to look cool), but you also have the specialized SSR with 20 inch barrel. As you said the 16" barrel design is a very accurate and reasonably long range DMR, while still being compact and light enough to lug around all day and even get into tight spaces with your fellow infantrymen. The SSR is much more of a dedicated sniper's weapon. It is longer, heavier and more expensive, because it has been tweaked to get the last ounce of accuracy out of the system. So I think you just made my point. Cheers.

@EsotericResearcher777 Really? No more 'reciprocating thumb dislocator'. I may have to check one out.

Good point. The M110 was a big time improvement over the M14 and it's variants. Check this video out: https://youtu.be/mby4hOq-DpI
