  7.  @TheLukasDirector  When we first went into Afghanistan there was a clear idea of what we were doing, going after the terrorist group who had staged the biggest attack on the United States since Pearl Harbor. Up to Tora Bora we did a great job, but then we (or really General Franks) screwed-up bad, and let UBL slip away. That meant we could not leave as we should have, and ideas of nation-building and extending democracy also creep into what became a 20 year clusterfuck.

Had the Afghan National Security Forces fought with a tenth of the tenacity of the Ukrainians it might have still been salvageable. Of course, to be completely fair making something of Afghanistan is beyond the capacity of any military on the planet.

  14. @shswiclw Sorry thats wrong. The Soviets when they were in Afghanistan in 1970's and 1980's did extensive geological surveys. The only way Afghanistan will ever profit from significant petroleum proceeds is if they allow pipelines to transit their country.
