So we fix it: we get rid of the zeros by calling them little itsy-bitsies. Since simple harmonic motion is the oldest fribble in our toy-chest, we'll say the little itsy-bitsies all vibrate. Trigonomentrically, so we can do math on them easily. Voila! String theory. What could be more obvious?

  8. Fine, Brian, except for one thing, that "quantum leap." A quantum leap is the smallest distance anything can move, and it's pretty usually exactly the distance stuff does move, if only to keep itself uncertainly enough located for Heisenberg to be happy. You don't need any evidence to take quantum leaps. Brownian motion will do the job for you.

  18. I love the fact that the Western end of the Panama Canal is the Caribbean end. The Eastern end is into the Pacific Ocean. It's almost but not quite North-South, with a slight trend in the "wrong" or counter-intuitive direction.
