  1. I don't think "difficulty of handling Kanji" is the explanation for the late entry of western machinery to Japan in any powerful ior dominating way. "Hanzi," both as Chinese and as Japanese characters, originated at University of Wisconsin long before they existed in any mass-market way in China and Japan.
