  1. No, Simon, his idea that the Chinese are saying "We're in charge now, you're finished" is hallucinatory. China is saying "We're trying to get domination of our immediate littoral and to open up our trade routes." That's all. McMaster's problem is that what China is doing is perfectly clear and to maintain a career as a commentator he has to have some sort of invisibles to reveal.
