(And incidentally, note that Wikipedia needs to be watched carefully. Their entry on "Nikola Tesla," for instance, has at some point become utterly dishonest, and has probably been forged by some follower of either the car company or its druggie nut-case owner.) What it really meant, both in Roman times and on the North American frontier, was "our gang" or "us friends." Groups of frontier settlers organizing themselves into counties came later. Fortunately, there is a clear meaning to "Posse Comitatus" today. It means the American political cult "Posse Comitatus." Your online take on them strikes me as pretty good.

  2. I want to know more about how American traffic cops are trained. I drive at normal Canadian speeds, which means I get pulled over about once in every four trips to the US -- and I find the guys uniformly polite, intelligent, and about 50-50 on costing me money.
