Coming out of the office steaming I ran into a couple of cops sitting around having coffee and they looked at me quizzically, like what was I so het up about. I muttered, "Like Shakespeare said, `First thing we do we kill all the lawyers'," and they damn near gave me a standing ovation. It's a reaction I've seen a couple of other times, too.

  35. But Gil, the US is the country with the hundreds of millions of guns out there. All countries with heavily armed populations, e.g. Switzerland, Israel, the US, have disproportionate suicide rates and disproportionate rates of suicide by gun. Rural Canada has a regretably large rate of gun death. Guns are dangerous everywhere. Only with guns can drunks, fools, crazies, and the depressed, shoot people, themseslves or others. A well regulated militia would be very careful about its membership, and would keep its guns in the armory, or at least under lock and key supervised by trained personnel, it seems to me.

It the Republican Party were true to its own values they would have 25'd Trump out around month six -- once they'd got their phalanx of Federalist judges, and once it was clear that Trump was in multiple, daily, violations of his Oath of Office. Since they aren't, since their only values are vindictiveness, greed, and fear of the thug on the barstool at the end (and the radio evangelist the thug's mother-in-law berates him about), the long term hope of the Republic lies in the destruction, root and branch, of the GOP. America has the conservative party it needs: the New Democrats of Barack Obama and the Clintons. It will know it has grown a left one when somebody in Congress asks "Why do we need a fourth aircraft carrier?" That's still a bit in the future. Maybe after the 2020 census?
