  1. No surprise here. The Red States are the ones where all the productive people have left. All the whiners and losers have stayed behind. Naturally, and they get the most Federal transfer payments for unemployment, remedial ed, and the two sorts of welfare for the rich, military bases and farm spending. The farm program, originally to bail out the family farm, today helps agribusiness. The largest farmers in America are Coca-Cola and ADM, the former Archer, Daniels Midland. Military bases? They follow the senior votes in Congress: they tend to be in places where the losers and whiners have been electing the oldest, most tired Republicans for a generation. Think Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama: red, old, tired, and full of unemployables ready to sign up for the government job.

The only red state with a prosperous economy at the moment is North Dakota. It is temporarily wealthy on the back of mining carbon, the pollutant with which we are currently planning on killing ourselves off. All the rest of them have marginal farming industries. Agriculture is the urban "Hanging Gardens of Babylon." When our settlements grew beyond hummock gardening, and we started domesticating the wild animals we'd kept in live storage outside the cave, we contracted the whole thing out to the 'burbs. There the yokels could watch the sun and the rain make the grass come up. That's agriculture: urban gardens contracted out for scale. Beyond that, their economies are Social Security and military bases, both of them just cheques from Washington. Iowa and Texas used to have fine promising university cities, Ames and Austin. These might have had hopes of evolving into advanced post-industrial powers like Cambridge, Boulder, and Palo Alto. Both have been sabotaged by their local dogmatist dimwits.

  4. ​ @GoodFang  Google it up: Illinois' population trend is long-term upwards. It has lost slightly during the Trump years. Trump's tariff policies are massive destroyers of manufacturing jobs, and he shows every sign of destroying Boeing, turning major management and engineering error/tragedy into an economic disaster. If he cuts off parts resupply to China that'll make him the best salesman Airbus ever had.
