  1. Kara, Everybody didn't just calm down after 9/11. Everybody, myself included, signed up for Dick Cheney's murder of a million Iraqis in the Neocons' crusade-du-jour. We suddenly found ourselves a white horse to follow and a standard to fly, "Twin towers? <beat> Get Saddam!" Saddam, a soldier whom we delivered to his enemies' hangman, was an Arab satrap no better nor any worse than the rest of the bunch -- and he had less responsibility for 9/11 than had several hundred Saudi princes, essentially none. I'm reminded of Bertrand Russell's definition of pragmatism, roughly "The doctrine of the juror who considers not the guilt or innocence of the accused but who it would be best to hang." 9/11 and then our killing of Saddam gave the GOP the only genuinely won election they have managed in thirty years, all the rest being electoral defeats obviated by the anti-democratic Electoral College. It was a victory for the Bush family. Some calming down!
