Because he is a very bright lad with a firm grip on reality... unlike, uh, well, ya know...

Who shops at Walmart, George? Trump's base. Who's going to love paying $17 for a fine Stanley wrench instead of the so-so Chinese one they can get for a buck at Dollarama? Former Trump base.

Giggle! How about, e.g. a 25% export tax on all Apple products? Fracking like crazy plus NAFTA are the only things keeping Canada from slapping "equalization payments," i.e. great big fat export taxes on oil and gas. If the Chinese are pushed far enough -- and this is still six or eight months at the minimum in the future -- the same thought might occur to the Chinese.

Jin Lei, Well said. It's a pity Xi Has to make retaliatory gestures to show his own manufacturers that he is on their side. It would be both optimal in economic-theoretical terms and glorious as international politics if he/they/China would simply ignore Trump, maybe saying "OK, we'll talk whenever you're ready." Like any bully, Trump is a very weak character, and in this case he is on a foundation of sand because the people he's screwing the worst are American consumers and American manufacturers, starting with the steel and aluminum users.

No, Greg, he's not. He may be the only one you've heard, but what he is saying here is dead center of the consensus of all competent and responsible people who know the field. One place you can start informing yourself might be the Wall Street Journal's very good blogs out of Beijing.

Stung, Yes, trade wars hurt all around. Duh. What would you expect for a man who managed to lose money running casinos? This is a champion loser playing his usual lose-lose. The problem is, the American consumer and the American taxpayer don't have a whole slew of Russian gangsters to bail them out.
