  2. China has mandated a 50% cut in the soybean ration of domestically raised hogs. Their scientists believe they can cut it by 82% without harm. And alternate suppliers? Henry Kissinger brought the Brazilian soybean export industry into existence in 1972. He and Nixon threated Japan with a ukase on American soybeans for Japan through pique at a single Japanese UN vote they didn't llike. At the time soybeans were were more for tofu than for hog finishing, so the Japanese naturally took this as an extreme insult, a threat to hearth and home sort of thing. Japan was in heavy financial surplus at the time, so they just shrugged and directed some of their fire-hose of cash from US Treasuries into Brazilian soybean farms, processors, and infrastructure. Being a schoolyard bully is never a good long-run plan.
