Metzger gives us an almost self-satirical version of the flim-flam the banking and brokering class have been shovelling at us to get "financial services" taking home something like an eighth of the economy. The fact is the world is no more complicated, nor is there more information out there, than when we stood in front of our caves looking at the stars and listening for the sabre-toothed tigers. We've got a lot more trivial detail. Some computer somewhere can tell me the number of pairs of shoe-laces manufactured in Duang Bing yesterday. And we can't see the stars any more because of the light pollution, so we listen to our witch-doctors with the satellite photographs. End of the day, we're still going with our best hypotheses, about the Eternal, and about that pesky growling sound coming out of the YouTube. But there sure is a chunk of wealth out there for the taking: who can figger out how to claw back the billions the arbitrageurs have been waltzing off with every time an indicator flutters? I don't think we need to be talking guillotines. Yet. But calling back FDR's TNEC, the Temporary National Economic Committee, to see what's been going on might make some sense.
