  1.  @bfqywqd  What the English Empire taught us is that imperialism rots the soul -- and thus destroys the functioning -- of the imperialist. If the English had woken up to the stupidity of their empire in, say, 1870, they would be as rich as the Dutch today. And it might have worked in 1930 or even 1945...
