  2. OK, How 'bout "China has been making good quality steel since northern Europe was still in the bronze age"? At that time there was "high quality" steel in, e.g. Damascus, and parts of Japan and today's Spain, but it was only high quality from the point of view of the sword owner. I.e. it wouldn't have been any use in today''s jet engines -- or pen balls.
