  1. This is a delusion, perhaps the most widely held delusion in Western culture. Nothing, exactly nothing, in the real world obeys the binomial distribution. All real world distributions are fractal and heteroskedastic. Very many can be expressed in forms which approach Poisson distributions. Nature is fat-tailed. The one small truth about the sainted binomial distribution is the arithmetical curiosity that the sum of enough different single-peaked distributions will very often approach a binomial distribution -- particularly if you brutally exclude supposed "outliers."
