The muslims I meet here tend to be refugees from exactly the sort of authoritarian and mob-violent societies you are objecting to. They make fine Canadians and add to the richness of our culture. You are right, however, in pointing to the problems of the societies they are fleeing. My own feeling, and it's tentative, is that the racism and particularism that you so correctly object to are surface manifestations, the waves above the deep current, of larger problems. The larger problem is not the shouting about who wears what kind of hat on Sunday, or Saturday, or... It is massive unemployment of young men. There are well-known false solutions to this, militarism and gangsterism, the latter often disguised (as in the United States) as religious fundamentalism. I think you should pay more attention to that, and think about solutions to it.

  5. The Madagascar storm around 6:00 is interesting. We had one like it in Toronto, something I've only experienced that one time: from north to south the storm was less than two kilometres long: I could see both ends of it from my porch. But intense! It rained several inches in less than two minutes, ruining the wallpaper of a flight of stairs leading up to an open roof door. Unique in my experience, it was more like being under a tap than in rain. Stronger than the shower in my bathroom. And then it was gone. Sunlight again.

  14. Funny story: I missed out on the Mao fad because I read a magazine called "Problems of Communism" which years later turned out to be financed by the CIA. They sturck me at the time -- 1959~61, the end of high school when I was active in UN Model assembly stuff, and so rad a lot of international affairs, as sensible. Years later they turned out to have been correct. How did they get it right? They subcontracted the work -- and they got their numbers of starrving out of subcontracts to University of Manitoba.. Why were the numbers so good? Manitoba is in the middle of Canada's wheat belt -- so they had to keep track of how many live, dead, and in-between customers they had! :-)

  15. There's an important forty years missing from this video, from 1880 to 1920. That would be the age of steel, WWI, and an interesting little thing that doesn't get noticed: at the beginning of that period every artillery shell was driven by gun-cotton which meant seventeen pounds of cotton on average. Uh, they never told us in gradeschool: artillery shells were a whole lot more important than shirts and skirts. Then along came the Haber-Frisch process for ammonia: sheap agricultural fertilizer was revolutionary enough, but the end of half the cotton market was more. Both of these mean a huge demand for industrial labor -- and hence the trek north fo r a lot of Southern blacks. Not good work, Vox -- and I haven't even touched on the Progressive and socialist Parties, which you seem to have forgotten entirely... Not good at all. Somebody call rewrite, OK?

Is it Chancellor Kohl's $800,000,000,000.00 bribe to the East Germans to vote Christian Democratic on reunification? (He paid off their worthless money at par, bumping their net worth up almost a trillion dollars in the process.) Or is it the 900,000-pound pay-off the London bankers gave Sir John A. MacDonald in 1867 in exchange for half the land along the Canadian Pacific railroad (on top of all the land under it, obviously)? That nine-hundred-thou may not add up to the spondulix Kohl gave away, but the land the bankers got is definitely in the trillion dollar range.

  23. The basic problem of golf is how can speculators pay the taxes on land while they wait for a city to grow up around it. Put a golf course on it and charge people to talk around on it. But what if suburbias stop growing? No more automatic profits for speculators who manage to hold onto pieces of land. Then a ball comes along that wants longer holes? Um. Real estate speculation problem.

Yes, it would be interesting if you could put up an informative video about the microchip industry in China, about the competition between different companies around the world, or about the effects of different societies upon their microchip industries.   27. The ozone hole was caused by the release of fluorocarbons, almost all of which were made by one company, Dupont. Dupont's scientists figgered out what they were accidentally doing, so they went to their boss, Senator Pete Dupont, who essentially owned the joint. They explained the problem. He said "Right. We're going to have to stop." Stopping was the easy part -- which they did. The hard part was chasing down all the fluorocarbons in the tens of millions of refrigerators out there. They did that, too. Well done, Pete Dupont... uh, modulo the detail that you-all caused the problem in the first place.

  28. There is nothing new about these ridiculous Japanese textbooks: the right wing of the old Liberal Democratic Party colonized Mombusho, the Ministry of Education, from 1945 to the present. The good news is the teachers are in continual uproar between their Communist and Socialist factions. (Imho the Communists are the comparative moderates, modernist to futurist, while the Socialists are olde line Marxists stuck somewhere around 1840.) This means the kids are at least exposed to the idea that their textbooks are horseshit.
