  1. Funny story: I missed out on the Mao fad because I read a magazine called "Problems of Communism" which years later turned out to be financed by the CIA. They sturck me at the time -- 1959~61, the end of high school when I was active in UN Model assembly stuff, and so rad a lot of international affairs, as sensible. Years later they turned out to have been correct. How did they get it right? They subcontracted the work -- and they got their numbers of starrving out of subcontracts to University of Manitoba.. Why were the numbers so good? Manitoba is in the middle of Canada's wheat belt -- so they had to keep track of how many live, dead, and in-between customers they had! :-)
