There's an important forty years missing from this video, from 1880 to 1920. That would be the age of steel, WWI, and an interesting little thing that doesn't get noticed: at the beginning of that period every artillery shell was driven by gun-cotton which meant seventeen pounds of cotton on average. Uh, they never told us in gradeschool: artillery shells were a whole lot more important than shirts and skirts. Then along came the Haber-Frisch process for ammonia: sheap agricultural fertilizer was revolutionary enough, but the end of half the cotton market was more. Both of these mean a huge demand for industrial labor -- and hence the trek north fo r a lot of Southern blacks. Not good work, Vox -- and I haven't even touched on the Progressive and socialist Parties, which you seem to have forgotten entirely... Not good at all. Somebody call rewrite, OK?
