A Hangul note, for around 42:00 : I once took a class in Korean at the Asahi Culture Center in Shinjuku, where I was the only white face. The instructor was showing off the power of Hangul by showing everybody how to write their names, all Japanese until he got around to me. Then he wrote up the equivalent for loid joans, and read it. I said it was not bad, but in Welsh Ll is a single letter of the alphabet, pronounced, more or less, "HL." He made just the slightest adjustment to the Hangul and had Lloyd-Jones in perfect Welsh. I think it is likely that the Koreans are so good, so much better than the Japanese, at learning new languages because their writing system is so good: a syllabary written in Hangul can be almost perfect, whereas one that tries to do it with Katakana for the pronunciation guides will be hopeless.

@Luboman411 Nobody dies from laughing anything to death. Perapera translates 笑死 as "‎laughing to death.‎" This sort of thing is the normal way human languages work. All of them. Always.

@wngmv Almost but not quite. It means mother in the sense of not being the teenager she looks like. Western understandings of Asian age and respect tokens often have slight errors of this type. "Respect for age," for instance, is not a matter of devotion to the aged. In Japan the sixtieth birthday is celebrated in red, signifying the blood of a new childhood, the infantile inability of dotage; respect for age means the eighteen-year-old takes orders from the twenty-something manager and shuts up about it.

@Tzahr Koreans use a mixture of Chinese characters, Hangul, and Roman and Arabic characters. The Roman and Arabic ones are newfangled additions to the Chinese characters to which King Sejong added Hangul a few centuries back. Your version, Roos, is some sort of weirdie Official Reality spouted by pedagogical halfwits and has only tenuous contact with this planet.

None of "to," "play," "that's," "the," or "verb" is in the kanji. Your comment is just as ridiculous as that one.

"Hiragana, katakana and kanji are the three basic scripts in the Japanese writing system. " Uh, no. Those are three of the main five. Romaji are far more common than katakana, and Arabic numerals are far more common than Chinese glyphs for the numbers.

Well said! A nice piece of work! I went around for years thinking that Sejong must have been a genius. Then I realised that all his stuff was really done by committees, sorta like the King James, "the only competent work ever done by a committee." Then I figgered he either put the committee together, or endorsed its work, and he got the thing into circulation, which is a fer real achievement. So I was right the first time: he was a genius!

You're obviously bright and hard-working. Why, then, do you go to so much trouble to make videos that are nothing but long boring whines? With your ability you could probably have made decent and interesting videos about how the Japanese systems work, about what we are adopting from them, about what has worked and what hasn't over history, about how differences in writing styles have reflected different historical and social stratification periods. But no, it's all about you. You find this odd. You find this strange. You are so superior to people who can't meet your standards of it's-not-quite-clear-what. Sad. You coulda bin a contender.

"4 out of 5 students agree: Kanji = Evil." Well, it's obvious, innit? This being the digital and binary age, we should all switch to Morse code. Just dots and dashes. No pesky 26 letters to memorize. Simple. Easy. Musical. Some of us can be beep and boop-ers; others dings and dongs. Only the stick-in-the-mud traditionalists need be stuck with dots and dashes. Red/green, fiddle and faddle -- on into the brave new world made possible by the binary revolution, the death of those clumsy old pictograms, ateji, kana, and the rest of that. Got it, boomers?
