  1. An excellent piece, with, I think, good judgement overall. One small quibble: yes, a huge percentage of the Russian tanks defeated wer simply abandoned, many of these for simple lack of fuel. Some of those abandonements, however, were for a very good reason: rational fear. I was struck by one aerial photograph of four abandoned tanks -- surrounding one that had just been eviscerated from the air, by a Javelin or its equivalent. Those four crews left for a very good reason: running for their lives!

  2. This isn't a Congressional case of alien spacecraft, it's a whole bunch of municipal cases of public mischief. The local cops should round all these fools up and charge them with mischief, disturbing the peace, and possibly a bunch of minor conspiracies. Their defense would hhave to be, if the charges were crafted right, "Here is the location of the space craft." When the cops go there and find nothing, give 'em ten days in the slammer and fine them court costs. That should be the end of the whole pitiful clown show.

  5. Small problem, Tully: nobody won WWI -- until 1945. You can make the case that the tank won the war at Kursk, or perhaps earlier, at Stalingrad, but that brings us to the Great Military Secret. The Great Military Secret is that every military has to keep it from their own tank crews that in almost every tank-to-tank confrontation almost everybody on both sides dies. Tanks are good against horses, as in Poland. They are good against essentially unarmed infantry, as in WWI. But tanks against tanks are a losing proposition -- for the tanks on both sides.

  6. newrev9er Excellent comment. Well done and thank you. I especially like your second point. You're right that "aliens piloting spacecraft" is ridiculous. It's a straight transfer of "Snoopy's plane and the Red Baron's have to have pilots" kind of imaginings.
