Kennedy's "deeply isolated" United States of 1940 somehow seems to have had a quasi-colony in the Philippines and a massive military base on the former British colony of Hawaii. The first it had taken by war against weak Spain. The second it had captured through guile and the threat of force. A not very neutral sort of neutrality. Some might call it military imperialism.

I think the man is quite wrong to say that WWII was the first war in all of history where civilian deaths outnumbered civilian. The various Henries rampaging around France in the 12-14th centuries pretty much burned the place to the ground, with the result of total depopulation. More generally, throughout history life has been close enough to the edge that any war meant the disruption of markets, and hence of food supplies. Given even minor under-nourishment you then got mass disease. So basically I think the guy misunderstands that aspect at least of war.
