  1. How many voters today are Pavarotti fins? A one digit percentage of the over 80 crowd, I'd guess. I'm 81, and bumped into Pavarotti on the street (outside the same bookstore Lord Thompson shopped at) in maybe 1963: he filled Maple Leaf Garden, the hockey arena (which must have really lousy acoustics) because Toronto had just gone through their immigration boom. Superb craftsmen, they built the joint as it is today: I once watched a guy doing a fine artistic job spackling a storefront; when I complimented him he said, "Of course. We built the Colosseum"!

  2. Newt was a wholly owned subsidiary of Cannon Mills, the excellent textiles group, a couple of whose nine companies were in Georgia. When Cannon Mills went, that was the end of Newtie's easy money.
