He lost the overall election by three million votes, but because of the uneven distribution of both parties' support, and the bias of the Electoral College in favor of the smaller states he pulled off the victory in the place that matters. This is a belated revenge of the slaveholders of 1789 because the Electoral College and its bias were designed with their interests in mind.
