  1. One of the projects my late father, a weapons chemist, worked on was the "Churchill Special." This was a rudimentary pistol with a few bullets in a cardboard box, shovelled out of Sterling bombers over France before the re-invasion. The intent was that it was to be used gainst the Germans by Partisans. Some of these may even have existed. Instead, it was used by Gaulists and Communists after D-Day, ("Les communistes aussi, ceci c'est la France," -- deGaulle) in a sucession of nights of the long knives, slaughtering collaborators. After their possibility of collaboating had ended. Let it never be forgotten that DeGaulle had only two real military victories: against the Algerians and the Vietnamese in 1945.
