  2. ASUS is that Taiwanese brother-sister couple, right? (This is apocryphal, but the story I heard was there were these two brilliant Chinese kids doing their PhD's in electrical engineering, at SoCal, I think it was. The people in their home village in Taiwan checked up on them from time to time, and eventually they got their degrees. The folks in the hometown then put up some money to let them get into business and Lo, they did $100 million in business the first year: ASUS. All the stuff of theirs I've seen has been fine, and I wish them well, even though I suspect any story that romantic.) Any thoughts on where the centre of energy and innovation on the Mainland might be?

  5. I suspect I have bad news for you: that five-year guarantee covers the cost of the SSD, not the disaster for your data!

  6. 'Bout right. I bought a Swiss can opener for five dollars fifteen years ago. It came with a five year guarantee, and indeed it stopped working after six years. By that time the price had increased to nine dollars, so I switched to the Chinese one for a dollar. No guarantee, and the first one lasted 18 months. The price increased to $1.25 and I learned to use it more carefully: the second on is still going strong two years in... Ten years from now the Chinese one will be as good as the Swiss one, and so it goes. Cheers: I think your video-column is superb, and you are doing fine work! Thanks!
