The managing family owns the majority of the shares of most of them, but they are formally separate companies and all have their own managements. They are connected by a storm of bicycles, carrying the IBM cards from the near-empty parts bins on the line, telling these near-subsidiaries what to send over by fork-lift, toot sweet. The company treats the streets of the city like its own factory aisles, and all these companies' bicycles and fork-lifts are most of Toyoda's city traffic.
