Peak carbon right now would be reasonable for anybody and everybody -- but we don't have any business demanding it of the Chinese until we do it ourselves. Still, it's worthwhile thinking about how exactly sensible it is: "Peak now" simply means we're not going to increase our bad acting. Peak later means, um, uh, we're dithering, and we're not really sincere, and we're entitled to get away with something, and FOAD. It's not a rational position. It's a position of not doing the right thing by deciding to do more of the wrong thing -- i.e. the wrong thing.
